Terms and Definitions

Welcome newbies! This is a list of terms and definitions you will often come across in spanking, BDSM, chatrooms, stories, etc. I hope this list helps those of you that are curious, have little experience or exposure to spanking and BDSM, or just need a refresher on what some of the common words and abbreviations in this kink are about.

Roles

Top - a person that spanks another. Often paired with bottom or brat. Tops are usually 'just' into spanking as opposed to some of the heavier aspects of BDSM.

bottom - a person that likes to be spanked. bottoms are usually 'just' into spanking as opposed to some of the heavier aspects of BDSM.

brat - a person that often uses childish or lighthearted antics to get a spanking or attention, sometimes another term for bottom.

Dom/Dominant - another type of Top, although Dom's usually are used more to describe Tops that are into BDSM as well as spanking

Domme - Female version of Dom

sub/submissive - a bottom that usually is into BDSM as well as spanking

Daddy/Mommy - a Top that plays a parental role to a bottom, often involves ageplay

Master - another type of Top that usually involves more control and ownership than a Top/bottom or Dom/sub relationship. Can also be a term of respect.

Mistress - Female version of above. Can also be a term of respect.

slave - another type of submissive that is often 'owned' or in a relationship that usually involves a heightened level of control.

switch - a person who takes on both Top and bottom roles with different people, 'switching' between roles as the setting allows

spanko - person interested in spanking or who lives an active spanking lifestyle

SAM - smart assed masochist - usually a 'mix' of a sub and a brat, with the bratting antics being more along the lines of sassy and smart-mouthed comments rather than antics and jokes

Story Definitions:

Many people (including me) label their stories to warn readers of the content. Capital letters in story definitions indicates an Adult. lowercase indicates a child or teen. Example: (M/F, ageplay, belt) would indicate that the story is about a Male adult spanking a Female adult with a belt, and the story contains instances of ageplay. These are often called spoiler lables.

F/M - Female Adult spanking a Male Adult bottom

M/F - Male Adult Top spanking a Female Adult Bottom

M/f - Male Adult Top spanking a female child/teen

M/f/f - Male Adult Top spanking two female children/teens

F/F/m/f - Two Adult Females spanking a male and female child/teen

(that should give you the idea, they are interchangeable)

nc - nonconsensual spankings or activity

R/L - real life - story is not fiction but based on real life events

belt-paddle-cane in the title often indicates which types of implements are used in the story

oral - story contains instances of oral sex

anal - story contains instances of anal sex

rape - story contains instances of rape

incest - story contains instances of incest

sexual content/sex/sc/erotic - story contains sexual activity

Flash Fiction - stories under 750 words, often as short as 250 words

Cyber Collars

In chatrooms, you will often see submissives wearing online 'collars'. The collar indicates that the submissive belongs to another, and that relationship is to be respected by others in the channel. For the sake of example, we will use Jane and her Dominant Tarzan.

In most chatrooms, Dominants/Top nickname are usually in Upper case and submissives/bottom's in lower case. There are exceptions, many people do not like being restricted and labeled by this unwritten rule. I'm not a fan of online collars, but for the sake of understanding what you may see, here are some examples.

jane{T} - curly brackets indicate the sub has an online collared relationship with Dominant, Tarzan.

Tarzan{j} - some dom's also use the brackets in their own nicks to show they own a submissive. In this case, jane.

jane[T] - the straight brackets are usually used to show the relationship is real life rather than purely cyber.

jane[{T}] or jane{[T]}- use of both brackets indicates that jane and Tarzan have a real life relationship that is likely long distance, and most of their exploration is done online.

jane-{T} - the use of the - between the nickname and the collar usually indicates that the dominant is either just a mentor, or the submissive is still 'in training'
